Russia is ready to become Ukraine's largest investor - President Medvedev
Russia may become the largest investor in Ukraine's economy, said President Dmitry Medvedev during a meeting with representatives of business circles of both countries as part of the VII Ukrainian-Russian economic forum in Kyiv.
"Russia today is one of the biggest investors in Ukraine, holding the fourth place in the ranking. But if we talk about the future, I believe that Russia may be the first investor, and not because there are some geopolitical reasons, but simply because we are very close, the economies and ourselves are very closely linked with one another," he said.
Dmitry Medvedev also said that as of January 1, 2010, Russia's direct investment in Ukraine's economy was about $2.7 billion. "That's good, but not much. So I think there is something to talk about," he added.
According to the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine, the ten major investor countries, which account for over 81% of the total direct investment, are: Cyprus - $ 8,593.2 million, Germany - $ 6,613.0 million, the Netherlands - $ 4,002.0 million, Russia - $ 2,674.6 million, Austria - $ 2,604.1 million, the United Kingdom - $ 2,375.9 million, France - $ 1,640.1 million, U.S. - $ 1,387.1 million, British Virgin Islands - $ 1,371.0 million and Sweden - $ 1,272.3 million.
