President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych, who met in Istanbul Tuesday with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, called economic cooperation "a matter of national interest."

The President said that today the common objective of Ukraine and Azerbaijan is to increase turnover, whose fall in 2009 was 50%. "It does not meet the real potential of this country. Our task today is to resume the trade turnover," Yanukovych said. In his opinion, the current volume of $1 billion "may be confidently increased at least twice."

He expressed the belief that "today Ukraine has entered a new period, which will have a positive impact on our trade and economic relations, and the relations between our countries and peoples," and expressed hope that the President of Azerbaijan will visit Ukraine in the near future.

For his part, Ilham Aliyev stressed that his country would like to fully realize the potential of bilateral relationship with Ukraine.
