Ukraine’s grain harvest rose to a record 56 million metric tons as of today after favorable weather aided yields and farmers planted more corn.
Corn accounted for 20.4 million tons, the Agriculture Ministry said in an e-mailed statement. The average yield climbed to 6.2 tons a hectare (2.47 acres) from 4.6 tons a year ago.
The wheat harvest advanced to 22.3 million tons from 16.9 million tons a year earlier. The barley crop increased to 9.1 million tons from 8.5 million tons.
Ukraine’s previous record-high grain harvest was in 2008, when farmers reaped 53 million tons and 25 million tons were exported. The ministry forecasts grain exports at 27 million tons in the current marketing year begun July 1.
Corn was harvested from 3.3 million hectares, or 92 percent of planted areas, the ministry said. Harvesting has yet to take place on 288,000 hectares.
The sugar-beet crop reached 19.4 million tons, and the root was harvested from 99 percent of planted areas.
