Kiev region is situated in the northern part of Ukraine, in the basin of Dnieper river and its affluents (Desna, Irpen, Trubezh, Pripyat, etc.). Dnieper river is the main water way of the region. Large Kiev water storage was created above the city of Kiev. In terms of administration, the region is divided into 25 districts. The region consists of 10 towns of regional submission, 14 towns of districtal submission, 30 urban settlements, and 1,220 villages. Belaya Tserkov, Borispol, Brovary, Vasilkov, Irpen, and Fastov are the largest towns in the region.
Territory of the region is 28.4 ths. sq. km (4.7% of Ukraine’s square). It borders on Zhitomir, Vinnitsa, Cherkassy, Poltava, and Chernigov regions, as well as Gomel region of Republic of Belarus.
Railway is main transport in the region. Road transportation is well developed. River transportation plays an important role in the region. Freight and passenger navigation is carried out over rivers Dnepr, Desna, and Pripyat. City of Kiev is the largest transportation hub. Capital city of Ukraine is connected with large towns of Ukraine and foreign states by air.
Electric power engineering, food industry, chemical and petrochemical industries, machine building, and metal work have the largest shares in pattern of regional industrial output. Share of the region in gross national output of automobile tires is 63%, digging machines – 53%, paper and cardboard – 40%, and truck cranes – 39%. Foodstuffs occupy the share of 54% in pattern of consumer goods’ production pattern.
Kiev region has well-developed agricultural production potential.
Natural riches of Kiev region occupy a special place among variety of Ukraine’s nature. Clear waters of lakes, thoughtful willows over ponds (there are more than 1,500 ponds in the region), slender sycamore maples at roadsides, oak woods and groves, green valleys, blue shining of rivers, velvet carpets of meadows – what colors and charms were endowed to this territory by nature!
There are 55 water storages at the territory of the region including major parts of Kiev and Kanev reservoirs.
There are favorable climatic conditions, combination of different vegetative groups, availability of numerous water objects, as well as springs of mineral waters in the region. Kiev region is rich in cultural and historical sightseeing objects, which determine the role of Kiev region as an important recreational region.
The total square of natural and reserve fund objects in the region approximates 80 ths. ha. These territories include Dneprovsko-Teterevskoye reserve hunting ground, Zalesskoye forest and hunting ground, Zvonkovskiy and Zhukov farmsteads (forest reserves), Rzhitshevskiy and Dneprovsko-Desnyanskiy landscape reserves, Zhornovskiy ornithological reserve, as well as Ilyinskiy and Usovskiy hydrological reserves. Besides, natural landmark Babka, dendrological park Alexandria, and parks – monuments of landscape architecture also are included into the list of natural reserve fund.
At present Kiev region enumerates about 6,000 monuments of cultural heritage including 1,194 monuments of different epochs (ancient settlements, burial grounds, ramparts, places of battles, and historical events). 2,010 archeological monuments of the region are included into the Register of immovable monuments, and eight towns of the region are towns of all-Ukrainian historical importance. 24 monuments of national importance are separately listed in Kiev region sightseeing list. These monuments include numerous spiritual buildings of XVI–XIX centuries, palaces, architectural constructions, and parks (in particular, Belaya Tserkov Alexandria park), etc.
System of museum establishments has been formed in the region over dozens years. At the moment there are 2 state reserve museums (Battle for Kiev in 1943 and Vyshgorod historical and cultural museums), 15 state museums with 17 branches, and 241 museum establishments of local and departmental subordination. The following are the best regional museums: regional archeological museum (village of Tripolye – Tripolye culture), Yagotinskiy historical museum including museum-farmstead of folk artist Katerina Bilokur, archeological museum Dobranichevskaya site, Belaya Tserkov local lore museum, and a number of museum-farmsteads of outstanding personalities (Ivan Kozlovskiy, Ostrovskiy, Stetsenko, Shevchenko, Paustovskiy, Marko Vovchok, Korniychuk, Malyshko, and other). National historical and ethnographic reserve Pereyaslov uniting 23 museums is a place of specific pride of the region.
